Knitting a Cute Free Voodoo Doll Pattern for Halloween!
With Halloween just around the corner, I wondered what I could knit that had a spooky theme that was super cute and cuddly for my toddler.
So off to Ravelry I went and scrolled through the many wonderful patterns on offer (some of the ones I liked but didn’t make are linked below). After searching for quite a while, I came across a free pattern for a little voodoo doll that looked extra cute and squishy. The pattern, called Halloweenies, is provided for free as a Ravelry download by Cilla Webb. It looked to be a quick knit which would be perfect to fit in during my bubs nap times.
The pattern called for 8 ply Sirdar Snuggly yarn which is a mix of nylon and acrylic. Whenever I can, I prefer to work with natural fibres, so I decided to substitute the yarn for 8 ply Heirloom Cotton in the colour green. This alternative yarn choice worked out well, only 14 grams was needed to knit and seam the whole stuffy. Using 3.5mm needles, I was able to knit this little cutie up within one day.
Starting with the head and body section, I found the instructions were well written and easy to follow. I loved how the miniature size allowed for fast progress, making it satisfying to knit. After finishing the head and body, followed by each of the arms, I sewed the seams together stuffing as I went with a natural wool roving used for stuffing dolls.
Usually, I am not a huge fan of sewing on body parts as it can sometime be difficult to get them straight. But for this little fella, I felt it didn’t matter as much, as it added to the charm of this stitched up doll.
Once completely sewn up and stuffed, I used some black embroidery thread to sew on the mouth, a cross for the missing eye, and stitching to make it look like it had been repaired.
My little one helped me pick a button from our big jar of odd buttons, as well as coloured embroidery thread for the eye – she choose a dark grey button and pink embroidery thread.
After sewing on the eye very securely, with my bub closely watching, I gave her the new Halloween voodoo stuffy toy. She gave it a lovely big snuggle and a little pat on the back… so cute and a happy customer :)
