Crafting Consciously: My Sustainable New Year’s Resolution
As the year draws to a close, many people make resolutions for the coming year. Although I usually skip this tradition - often disappointing myself by not meeting them (they’re usually too specific or difficult to maintain in the short term; change is hard!) - this year, I am looking to make a broad resolution focused on crafting.
My crafting resolution for the year is to be more conscious and sustainable in my crafting choices. By this, I mean a few things:
Using what I have first. As a crafty person, I always have things stashed away from old projects, some materials bought but never used, or bargains picked up during sales or on clearance.
Using what I have first.
Avoiding the temptation to grow my stash unless necessary. I’m guilty of buying things just because they’re on sale, but my goal is to only purchase when I have a specific project in mind. Even then, I’ll refer back to point one: what do I already have that I could use or repurpose for the project?
Mending more - and getting creative with it! It’s always easy to buy something new when something gets worn, but giving an item new life feels so much better than purchasing a replacement. Not only does it make me feel good, but I also treasure the mended items more because they have a little bit of me in them.
Mending more - and getting creative with it!
Choosing natural fibres and sustainable products whenever possible. Natural materials feel better to use, last longer, and are more satisfying to repair. I’ll also aim to invest in quality tools that can withstand years of use.
I feel like these resolutions are broad enough to be achievable while still aligning with how I live my life day to day.
Do you have any crafting resolutions for the year? Resolutions are always so unique to each individual, and I find it fascinating to hear what others are planning.
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year and an amazing 2025!
