Op Shopping to Mend
Rarely do I buy new clothes, but when I do, I prefer op shopping! I particularly love finding things that need a new lease on life, you know the type, something that needs a little TLC. The bonus of these finds is that I can get to mending and adding my own personal touch to once already loved items. It also makes me happy to know that I have chosen something that may be passed over by others because of a small defect.
The back strap of this apron was torn. A handsewn patch to reinforce it did the job. A quick fix!
It may be as simple as sewing on a button (or changing them to ones your style), hemming up pants (all you short people out there know what I am talking about), stitching closed a small hole, re-sewing on a lose strap or closing a seam that is opening.
This dress had a broken button in the middle.
I removed the top button and used it to replace the broken one. Then I replaced the top button with one from my button jar.
Even when I point it out, no one has ever noticed the different button.
Or it could be to go crazy with visible mending techniques to cover staining, add fabric patches or strips over slightly worn looking sections, use embroidery, sashiko or darning techniques, or even piece two clothing items together to make a whole new garment without needing a pattern. The only limit is your imagination with these types of repairs - or should we say re-flairs!
If you are new to mending why don’t your give it a try? Even check out your current wardrobe for anything that would benefit from a little revamp.
